The Walk of Faith

During 1993, after the building of the Family Life Center, the church campus was further enhanced by the installation of a Walk of Faith. Rather than build concrete sidewalks leading to the Family Life Center, it was proposed by and a dream of Rev. Daryl Higgins to build the original Walk of Faith, which was designed by architect and member of First Protestant Church, Kirk Gregory. It contains Bible Scripture is surrounded by bricks containing names of members and friends of First Protestant Church. An addition was added to the Walk of Faith leading to the front entrance of the church. This addition was designed by Eugene G. Mornhinweg, Church Historian and Walk of Faith Director and is still under the direction of Mr. Mornhinweg.
The walk consists of granite blocks called pavers that are 16" x 16". Paver materials are Texas Red and Georgia Gray Granite. The red pavers form the crosses. Along the edges of the groups of pavers are rows of bricks.
Each paver will have a verse from the Bible, the name of the donor or the name of the person being honored, and the name of the town of residence. The bricks will have a name on each one. Verses in the walk will be used only once.
The Pathway of Life, from Coll Street to the Good Shepherd statue has verses from the New and Old Testament. The red pavers in the crosses tell the story of the creation of the world, the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount.
The second phase of the Walk of Faith is The Good Shepherd Walk. Located in the Courtyard, between the Sanctuary and the Family Life Center, and leading from the statue to the Good Shepherd Window, it contains verses from the bible. Also located in this portion of the walk are the three Trinitarian Fountains. They represent the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Reflecting Pool represents the still waters of the 23rd Psalm. Completing the overall aesthetics of the Courtyard are the two Memorial Planters, which contain various plants depicted in the bible.
The third section, The Living Cross, from Seguin Street to the front entrance to the Sanctuary, to the Family Life Center, consists of 16" x 16" pavers and bricks.
The forth section from Seguin Avenue to the front entrance of the Sanctuary consists of large 48" x 64" gray granite slabs inscribed with parables and 16 x 16" pavers with names that are honored by the parables.
The Heritage Wall, consisting of red pavers and bricks is located at the Coll Street walk. The Bible verses on these pavers are in German. Also inscribed on the bricks are the names of First Protestant Church Senior Pastors, who have served in this church to date. Recessed in the architecture are crosses made from cedar logs of the original church.
